The color images from this series represent the diversity of Chicago 's commercial districts . The streets which these store fronts occupy reflect its neighborhood much in the same way the “ Main Street ” can reveal the nature of a small town. The variety of social, ethnic, cultural, and economic makeup within these districts become evident through the application of color and signage applied to lure a specific consumer.

The Store Front Series evolved from similar interest observed in my Movie Theatre project; the specific use of color within an architectural subject and how it affects our response to place. Just as the vintage movie theater is disappearing, I fear the unique store front is giving into packaged design to attract a larger crowd.

The images submitted are from an archive of over two hundred images take within 1983 to the year 2000.

They have been part of two documentary projects: “Changing Chicago” and “Chicago In The Year 2000”.
